Rich Licursi

  • 5-year professional career with the LA Dodgers and Boston Red Sox organizations as well as independent baseball
  • Over 30 years in child development, including Director of the Westport/Weston YMCA and Board of Directors for in town sports

Joe DeFilippo

Executive Director of Baseball

Joe has done it all in his 40+ years in baseball as a player, coach/instructor, scout/ talent evaluator, and umpire.

Following a highly decorated career as a middle infielder that spanned for over 25 years across the country, Joe immediately began teaching and coaching young players the game he loves, in Alabama, Texas and then Connecticut. With experience in the game from the youth level up to the professional level, Joe has been involved in baseball first as a player from early aluminum bats to the Pan Am Games and everything in between, and as a coach up to the modern day game and all the new analytical measurements and tools used to help players achieve their baseball goals. Coach Joe is a direct disciple of renowned and top infield coach/ instructor Ron Washington, currently the MLB 3rd Base Coach and the organization’s lead infield instructor for the Atlanta Braves. Joe brings his keen knowledge of how to play the infield and all his years of experience as a player and coach directly to the players of Mission City Baseball with a hands on and demanding demeanor.

In addition, Joe has 20+ years experience as an umpire in youth, high school, and college baseball. He has also been involved in the scouting end of baseball as a talent evaluator at showcases/combines for prospective college and professional players.

Coach Joe has also been involved in coaching basketball, and football at both the youth and high school level.

Previously the organization founder & co-owner of the Connecticut RiverDogs, Coach Joe’s teams and players have won innumerable league and tournament championships throughout the East Coast.

Jim Pellegrino

Organizational Lead Infield
Instructor, Coach

Coach Jim has been affiliated with the Mission City Baseball Program (formerly known as Connecticut Cobras) since its inception as a scout and talent evaluator. Jim is our lead organizational infield instructor and throughout this winter has been working with all of our players, at all levels of the program.

Jim was an All-League player at Central Catholic HS in Norwalk, CT. Jim received numerous baseball scholarship offers from top D1 and D2 Schools, however a shoulder injury, that he sustained at the conclusion of his senior season, derailed his plans to play in College. After several years of healing and a long rehab period, Jim was able to resume his playing career, playing 20 seasons in the Senior Baseball League, where he played several years with Coach Rich, and together they won a National Championship in 2014.

Jim has also been a dedicated coach in the Orange LL program, where he coached several of our current Mission City players. Coach Jim brings a passion and knowledge of the game that is hard to match and we are very fortunate to have him on our coaching staff.

Tony Dalessio

Organizational Base-Running
Instructor, Coach

Coach Tony is the “glue guy” of the Mission City Baseball Coaching Staff.

Following his time as an impact player at East Haven High Baseball, Tony went on to play in College in RI. Thereafter, his playing career continued for the next 13 years for various teams in the NABA (National Adult Baseball Association).

Following the conclusion of his playing career, Tony started coaching youth baseball, which included 4 seasons with the East Haven 89ers, where he won numerous league and tournament championships and prepared young players for their high school baseball careers.

In addition to being a player and coach, Tony has been a long time Umpire, and has a vast knowledge of the rules and intricacies of the game.

Tony has been with Mission City Baseball since the Fall of 2021.

Mike Sciortino

Coach

Mike was an All State baseball player at Trumbull High School where he won the 1986 CT Class LL Championship ( Coach Rich was his teammate on that team). Following High School, Mike received a scholarship to play baseball at Central Connecticut State University, where he Pitched and played First Base. He was named Sporting News 1st Team D1 All American 1st Baseman as a college player and as a Jr. he hit .462 and was 3rd in the nation in batting average. Played summer baseball in 1989 in the Cape Cod Baseball League, for the Brewster Whitecaps.
Following  a highly decorated college career, Mike was drafted by the New York Mets in 1990. He went on to pitch and play 1st base in the minors for the Mets and then the Kansas City Royals, before his career was cut short by an injury. Following his playing career, Mike has coached High School and College Baseball, as well as served as a scout for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He has been with Mission City Baseball since January, 2022.

Tyrone Kingwood

Lead Outfield Instructor, Coach

Tyrone was a 3 sport athlete – Baseball, Football and Basketball- at Bassick HS, Bridgeport, CT, where he was All State in Football and Basketball. He played basketball at Cleveland State University and then baseball at Imperial Valley College in California, before being a first round draft pick ( 28th overall) in 1987 by the Montreal Expos. He played six years of minor league baseball and made it to AAA level. Tyrone has coached High School and College Baseball, as well as being a coach/instructor in American Legion Baseball and also at the youth level. He has been with Mission City Baseball since Summer, 2022.

Mike Spradlin

Coach

It is great to welcome Coach Mike to our coaching staff for the 2023 Season. We are very excited to have Mike with us, and the Championship mentality and attention to the finer details of the game that he brings with him.

Mike is originally from Fort Worth, Texas where he was a four year Varsity Baseball player. Following his high school baseball career, Mike played Baseball at the University of Texas, where he was a top on field performer for his last 3 seasons.

Mike then began his career as a baseball coach, first starting his training and working with then Texas Rangers Pitching Coach Tom House. Thereafter, Mike moved to Connecticut and started the highly successful CT Mustangs, which he ran for 16 years and built it into one of the premiere Baseball Programs on the East Coast, with 7 former players selected in the MLB Draft and 46 college commitments.

Mike’s initial work with Mission City Baseball will be working with our Middle School aged players for the Spring and Summer, 2023.

To MCA, baseball and softball are the tools we use to help develop the characteristics and independence necessary to not only be successful on the field, but more importantly, in life. Through our demanding yet positive learning environment, respect for the game, and playing against the best competition in amateur baseball and softball, we provide an unrivaled athletic experience for all of our players.

Facility

Insports has two little league baseball/softball lined, sand-colored, brand new MOMENTUM 41 artificial turf fields. To prohibit interference between the two fields, our divider curtain separates the two fields. Dimensions of each field are 175′ RF, 235′ CF, 165′ LF with 46′ ceilings. BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL CLEATS ARE ENCOURAGED! Above the fields are brand new LED lights. Contact Insports for rental options for your baseball group, softball group, or school.
